What The Critics Said

A short, strange one from the London Evening News tabloid.
17th August 1978

The Australians are showing their muscle again as film-makers in Backroads (Scala),
a low budget feature set in the outback of New South Wales.

It is a violent story of crude, hard-drinking, hard swearing thieves who steal a car, and
with guns at the ready cut a swathe of violence through the small townships in the wilderness.

Produced and directed by Phillip Noyce, the film has a rough honesty which outweighs
the general nausea it generates.
