Police force fined over riot injuries

8th June 2007

NSW Police has been fined $100,000 for failing to protect its officers in the Redfern riot.

More than 40 officers were injured after being pelted with rocks, bricks and Molotov cocktails during several hours of violence in the troubled Sydney suburb on February 15, 2004.

In the NSW Industrial Relations Commission yesterday, judge Roger Boland fined the force $100,000. The force had pleaded guilty to failing to ensure the health, safety and welfare of its employees under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. WorkCover said police were left exposed without adequate equipment or training.
