REDFERN has a long history of riots and violence against police. Some of these incidents include:

  • 2004 February 16 - Up to 40 officers injured in stand-off with 150 people, angered at the death of 17-year-old Thomas Hickey. The rioters blamed police for the incident, but police rejected claims they were chasing the teenager when he came of his bike and was impaled on an iron fence.
  • 2003, May 20 - Four police injured, five patrol vehicles damaged when 20 youths threw rocks and bottles after the arrest of a 17-year-old suspected robber at Redfern railway station.
  • 2002, October 7 - Two officers injured and a car torched by a hostile crowd of 100 people.
  • 2001, November 26 - Extra police deployed to Redfern and neighbouring Waterloo to protect 400 bus drivers who refused to service the route for two weeks because of stone-throwing youth gangs.
  • 2001, June 22 - Pub brawl erupts at 21st birthday party in Redfern, followed by five-hour standoff with more than 60 police.
  • 2001, June 21 - Bottles and bricks hurled at police and firefighters in brawl which broke out after an 11-year-old boy was chased after allegedly trying to rob a motorcyclist in Waterloo. One fireman hurt.
  • 2001, May 24 - Three police taken to hospital after being attacked, spat on and verbally abused by 40 residents on Eveleigh Street, Redfern.
  • 2001, April 5 - Three police hurt, vehicles damaged when paint and other objects thrown at them during an arrest.
  • 1999, October 7 - 16-year-old boy among four people charged with assaulting police with rocks, one officer hurt.
  • 1998, January 26 - Six police forced to abandon their cars while an angry mob of 200 pelted them with bricks and bottles, requiring backup from 30 riot police. One officer hurt.
  • 1997, January 28 - Police on foot forced to abandon chase for man wanted for outstanding warrants when they were pelted with bottles and other objects. Later that day, a television crew responding to a reported fire in Redfern was confronted by about 12 youths, one of whom threw a brick through the car's windscreen.
  • 1997, January 26 - Police showered with bricks and bottles in Redfern just days after a crime summit was held to address problems in the suburb.
  • 1997, January 21 - Two cars attacked by 10 youths at Redfern and their occupants robbed, and a police car damaged by a brick.
  • 1997, January 18 - Fifteen carloads of police involved in running battle with about 150 people at Redfern, two officers injured, three cars damaged and two arrested after morning raids in the suburb. Some rioters had baseball bats.
  • 1996 January 30 - Police pelted by rocks/bottles by about 40 youths before officers clad in riot gear dispelled the crowd.
  • 1996 January 5 - Mounted police and dog squad sent to Redfern for ongoing patrols after a dozen people threw bricks and bottles at police as they arrested a suspected taxi thief.
